Anxiety problems or panic attacks can seem to come from no-where. You can be going about your everyday normal routine and then out of the blue you can feel panicked or anxious.
Sometimes the cause is obvious, you might be nervous about a meeting or giving a presentation, and feeling a little nervous is perfectly normal. But controlling that anxiety level is important and not letting it overwhelm you.
Other times you can feel anxious about something that seems very normal to you, such as going to work, riding the bus or taking the elevator. This can seem like an irrational fear, like its just in your head, but the symptoms however are very real.
How can Tai Chi help cure anxiety?
First let me quickly explain what’s happening. Anxiety and panic attacks are often caused by too much stress. You may not feel stressed, it may feel like you have everything under control, but just bear with me. Each activity we do carries with it a certain amount of stress, it gives your brain something to think about. These tasks are like bricks, and if too many of these things are in your head at once, the bricks stack up. This can leave you unable to cope with an everyday task, and make it seem overwhelming. The trick is to knock down these bricks, clear your mind and let it start again. The best practice is to do this everyday.
I struggled with panic attacks for 10 years of my life. Until I learnt this simple stress block theory, now by practicing Tai Chi as a form of meditation, it means I can take 10-15 mins each day to clear my mind. So play that tutorial DVD, attend a local class, or even practice Tai Chi with your Xbox Kinect; whichever way works best for you. But make sure at the beginning and end of each day you take the time to clear your mind of all the tasks, just for 10-15 minutes and let yourself really relax.
